Parashat Shoftim | Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9
“… so that his heart be not haughty over his brothers (and sisters).” (Deut. 17:20).
This passage speaks to us of humility when considering the kingship of individuals over their subjects? It is, as well, a reminder that it is not only for kings and leaders that ‘to lead is to serve;’ it is also to remind ourselves that the nature of leadership is to serve.
It is said of Moses, the greatest leader the Jewish people ever had, that he “was very humble, more than any person on the face of the Earth.” (Num 12:3)
Consider that humility means that we are secure enough not to need to be reassured by others, that I am secure because I live in God’s love. And, yes, God has faith in me even when I don’t! And, when I am secure in myself, I can value others to the point that I look for and desire for them to achieve to their fullest potential.
Reflection:
In all humility, where and how do I encourage and support another to achieve and grow to their full potential?
