Maureena’s Torah Reflections
Parashat Vayete. Genesis 28:10-32:3
“A ladder is set up before us” (28.12)
Jacob runs for his life, a fugitive from the harm he himself has done. He carries no blessing in his hands—only a staff, fear, and the memory of a brother he wronged. When the sun suddenly sets, forcing him to stop, the Torah hints—through Rashi’s reading—that it is God who brings night early.
Jacob cannot outrun his guilt. He must pause. And in that pause—in the place where he feels blocked, and burdened—he dreams. The heavens open above him, and God speaks not of punishment, not of erasing the past, but of promise. God does not absolve Jacob of his deception. The work of repair is still his to do.
Yet, this unexpected grace—this assurance that he is still held, still accompanied—recharges Jacob’s spirit. He rises in the morning renewed, with courage to continue the long journey toward reconciliation and toward becoming the man he is called to be. The blessing he stole cannot be undone, but now he begins to grow into it with honesty and humility.
And so the Torah whispers hope to every heart that has stumbled: even in the place of our deepest failure, a ladder is set up before us.
